Always the expressive vocalist and performer, as well as a fascinating conversationalist, Magness has a laugh that could warm her native Detroit in January, and a sharp wit. But when our conversation turns to the subject of protest music, that her new album Love Is an Army is at least half-filled with socially and politically charged songs, her tone changes....

“I guess I liked the idea of having a uniform,” frontman Patrick Jones says. “I would judge bands by the way they were dressed, and I wanted to neutralize that. I thought that would be a fun way of doing it, and I’ve always like the costumed bands like The Mummies, The Monks and The Leeches. That’s kind of where the idea came from, more or less.”...

With two albums under their belt already, Aloud are putting out a brand-new single, “Falling Out of Love,” on Valentine’s Day. This will be their first release as an L.A. band, another step in what has been an exciting journey for them....

Singer and guitarist Frank Meyer formed the Cheetahs in 1995 when the desire struck to play the sort of sleazy, strut-heavy rock & roll that he saw in proto-punk pioneers The Stooges and MC5 and, later, The Supersuckers, Turbonegro and Nashville Pussy. Soon, the Cheetahs were signed to Greg Shaw’s renowned Bomp! Records....

The Eulogy formed about five years ago, when a group of East Coast transplants and hardcore scene veterans found each other on the West Coast. All of them had been in bands before, with guitarist Matt Henderson previously playing with such notable names as Madball and Agnostic Front....
