Opening acts at concerts usually pay their respects to the headliners. After all, the headliners tend to be the reason paying customers showed up in the first place.
But not so with New York act Buckwheat Groats, who might generously be described as riotous rap trolls.
Slated to open for rapper Lil Debbie on Tuesday night at Webster Hall in New York, they photoshopped and distributed the promotional flyer you see above. Debbie promptly had them booted from the show.
Things just got more out of hand from there.
Lil Debbie is an L.A. based swag-rapper who was once a member of Kreayshawn's White Girl Mob.
Having Buckwheat Groats as the opener on the bill made a certain sense: Both acts are colorful, sometimes outrageous characters. And the duo, made up of members who call themselves Lil Dinky and Penis Bailey, have gone viral several times with videos like “Million Dollar Menu” and this year’s TMZ-approved “Tom Hanks.” Pretty funny stuff.
“When we found out Lil Debbie was coming to New York,” Penis tells us, “we pulled some strings and got ourselves attached to this show. [With the flyer] we intended to praise Lil Deborah’s fine-ass figure. We thought we were paying homage. Our guts were wrong. It was supposed to be kind of a joke, a tribute, a goof-um.”
Indeed, Debbie and her management were not amused.
About 12 hours after the flyers were posted the Groats' social media pages, Debbie’s management contacted the promoter, who asked the group to take them down, which they did. They also apologized, and asked if they could stay on the bill.
After a back and forth between the Groats and Debbie's management, the group was officially 86'ed.
The Groats say they tried their hardest to work all of this out, albeit in their own twisted way. Dinky offered to take her to a sweat lodge to “get all the hate out,” he says, while Penis claims he was willing to go to the zoo to “smell some giraffes and shit and talk out our differences.”
Debbie herself didn't interact directly with the group, although she did get into a Twitter spat with a Groats fan named Mike Froccaro.
In any case, it looks like everyone will survive this brouhaha; the Groats are playing with Kitty later in the month in Brooklyn, and Debbie plays Whisky-a-Go-Go in L.A. on August 29.
One hopes the openers at that show will be more respectful.
