The theme of the 124th Rose Parade is the Seussian “Oh, the Places You'll Go!” Looking at the parade itself, that's really only about five-and-a-half miles. The floats in the Rose Parade — covered as they've been since the beginning by an army of volunteers wielding flowers, seeds, bark, leaves and other natural materials — are as much a tradition on New Year's Day as hangovers and that horrible U2 song. That this is in fact the 124th Rose Parade may not seem like the most urgent clarion call for you to traipse out to Pasadena and make your presence known (Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards have held the fort on KTLA since 1976 for the edification of both the lazy and the removed), it's the sheer magnitude of the smell of it all that must be experience to believed — speaking of trips and places to go. The MiracleGro-sponsored post-parade viewing carries with it a modern twist: you can download from iTunes an audio tour of the floats to listen to as you view them. Orange Grove Blvd./Colorado Blvd./Sierra Madre Blvd.; Pasadena; Tues., Jan. 1, 8 a.m.; free ($10 for the post-parade viewing). (626) 449-4100, tournamentofroses.com
