A man who was hallucinating drove head-on into a car, stabbed the driver, attempted to stab the passenger and then stabbed himself, Riverside County sheriff's officials said.
It happened Sunday about 11:55 a.m. in the 32200 block of Safflower St. in French Valley, which is east of Lake Elsinore.
Authorities gave the suspect, Garrie Aspengren Jr., somewhat of an out: They said he was “going through detoxification from pain medication and has not slept in three to four days. As a result …
… Aspengren began hallucinating and intentionally drove head-on into the victim's vehicle. Both occupants of the victim's vehicle were injured in the collision.”
After the crash witnesses told deputies they spotted the suspect run away and was stabbing himself with a cordless drill inside the garage of a nearby residence.
Bleeding from the neck, Aspengren was arrested and taken to Rancho Springs Medical Center for treatment and a psychiatric hold. He was booked on suspicion of four counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
The driver of the other care was taken to Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment of both the crash wounds and the stab wounds. The passenger was taken to the same hospital for treatment of injuries from the collision.
Not your typical Sunday drive, for sure.
