The transition from Norwegian fighter pilot to pet technology entrepreneur might seem unlikely, but for Morten Sæthre, the journey represents a consistent application of leadership principles learned in high-stakes environments.
Drawing from seven years in Norway’s Defense Forces and seven years piloting Boeing 737 aircraft, Sæthre has built Lildog (and Lilcat) into a $2 million revenue company that challenges the conventional wisdom of both pet technology manufacturing and corporate management structure.
Morten Sæthre’s unconventional path to leading a Norwegian pet technology company that has captured 45,000 customers across 21 European countries reflects a leadership philosophy forged in environments where precision, procedure, and individual excellence within structured frameworks can mean the difference between success and catastrophe.
From Military Precision to Corporate Strategy
Mortren Sæthre’s leadership philosophy came from what he describes as foundational experiences with courage-based decision making during his military service.
“In the Defense Forces, leadership was about courage. Courage to take responsibility for the action required. Courage to take a stance and stand up for one’s values, even in challenging situations. Courage to have the difficult conversation,” he explains.
This military background taught him to navigate between two distinct leadership perspectives: authoritarian mission-based leadership, where clear command structures dominate, and relationship-oriented leadership focused on building trust and team cohesion.
The ability to shift between these modes depending on circumstances became central to his management style at Lildog, where technical innovation requires both disciplined execution and creative problem-solving.
Sæthre’s subsequent aviation career at airBaltic and Norwegian reinforced these lessons while adding a crucial element: the primacy of procedures over personal authority. “In my seven years in the cockpit, it was procedures and rules that determined how we should relate to different situations, and not just the leader on board,” Sæthre mentions.
This experience shaped his conviction that sustainable organizations operate through systematic frameworks rather than individual decision-making. This principle would prove crucial as Lildog scaled from startup to international operation.
Building a Framework-Based Leadership Culture
The translation of military and aviation protocols into corporate management becomes evident in how Morten Sæthre structures Lildog’s operations. Rather than relying on traditional hierarchical control, he has implemented a framework-based leadership model that prioritizes systematic processes while empowering teams to exercise individual knowledge.
Sæthre shares, “We shall lead the process and steer the company through strategy and procedures, while giving the teams enough space and responsibility to solve complex problems on their own.”
This outlook allows Lildog to maintain quality standards across its Norwegian-manufactured GPS devices while establishing the innovation necessary for developing advanced features. The development of the pet avatar system, which mirrors dogs’ real-time activities, including eating, sleeping, and playing, reflects the creative potential unleashed when teams operate within clear frameworks rather than restrictive hierarchies.
At the same time, this same philosophy has enabled Lildog to pursue more ambitious technical goals, including artificial intelligence (AI) systems designed to detect early signs of illness in pets through behavioral analysis, while maintaining the operational discipline necessary for international expansion.
The innovation reflects Sæthre’s understanding that complex technical challenges, whether in cockpit emergencies or pet technology development, require teams capable of independent decision-making within established parameters.
He mentions, “At Lildog, we optimize and facilitate individual skills to flourish. My job as CEO is to engage, motivate, and facilitate through frameworks and procedures.”
This leadership structure has enabled Lildog to differentiate itself in a crowded market by maintaining complete control over manufacturing while competitors rely on Asian production facilities.
Scaling Norwegian Pet Tech Innovation to Global Markets
Morten Sæthre’s framework-based approach has proven particularly effective in scaling Lildog’s operations beyond Norway’s borders. The company’s expansion to 21 European countries and the successful deployment of 140 Lildog Hotel locations across Scandinavia demonstrate how systematic procedures can facilitate rapid geographic growth while maintaining operational consistency.
Lildog’s planned U.S. market entry in 2025 represents the ultimate step of bringing the Norwegian-developed frameworks to the world’s largest pet technology market. Sæthre’s confidence in this expansion reflects his belief that systematic excellence transcends geographic boundaries, a conviction reinforced by Lildog and Lilcat’s testing in Norway’s challenging terrain, where he maintains, “If it works in Norway, it works anywhere.”
For Morten Sæthre, the transition from protecting aircraft passengers to enhancing pet welfare represents not a career change but a consistent application of principles learned where precision, courage, and systematic excellence determine outcomes.
