Procurement can be a challenge in many industries. The process can require multiple approvals, stringent compliance checks, and lengthy vendor negotiations to ensure transparency. These steps can cause significant delays, but if they aren’t addressed, organizations can face critical shortages and slowed production — which directly impacts both businesses and consumers.

Madhumitha Somu Dinakaran tackles these issues with Lumaa, an AI-powered platform that creates intelligent responses to requests for proposals (RFPs). By automating this slow but key step, Lumaa helps companies develop timely and accurate proposals, avoiding delays in production.

Learn more about Madhu and how she is working to improve the procurement process.

A Story of Innovation and Leadership

Madhu grew up on a coconut farm in South India, where medicine shortages were a common problem. Inspired to find a solution for an issue so close to home, she pursued an education and developed a knack for innovation.

After her studies at Think Global School and Minerva University, she worked on various community projects, such as creating goggles for the visually impaired in Panama. She also produced a VR film about the Hiroshima bombing, which was showcased at a UN session in Germany. At another point, she helped create a South Korean elderly community that helped seniors combat loneliness using art.

Later, Madhu created Lumaa and moved to the U.S. in January 2024 to pitch it. After speaking with hundreds of procurement leaders in healthcare and technology, she secured funding from two investors: Founders Inc. and Neo.

The Challenge with the Procurement Process

The concept for Lumaa was born when Madhu noticed that procurement is slow, costly, and resource-heavy in most industries.

In healthcare, for example, suppliers have to navigate through a myriad of requests for proposals (each of which can range from 10 to 100 pages long). As such, identifying the right RFPs that match their offerings requires significant time and expertise. Even then, preparing a competitive response to each RFP demands meticulous attention to detail, including aligning the proposal with technical specifications, compliance requirements, and the buyer’s expectations.

This process can become even more challenging if the seller needs to gather input from multiple departments or secure external expertise, leading to potential delays and increased costs. This labor-intensive nature of responding to RFPs results in missed opportunities and inefficient use of resources, so by the time a project is finished, it’s usually consumed more resources than originally planned.

How Lumaa Is Transforming Procurement

To overcome these challenges, Madhu created Lumaa, an AI-powered platform that automates RFP discovery and responses. The AI bases its answers on three sources: previous RFPs, online information, and pre-approved library answers personalized to the buyer.

So when a contractor gets an RFP, Lumaa automatically analyzes the request and checks how well the contractor matches the requirement. If it’s a good match, Lumaa uses AI to answer the RFP accurately and fill out any required details. For any questions that need specific expertise or more details, Lumaa will notify the contractor’s team through Slack or Google and ask for more details.

Lumaa’s streamlined approach to handling RFPs makes for a smoother procurement process. It speeds up turnaround times, cuts down on paperwork, and avoids the usual back-and-forth clarifications that slow things down. And when the common delays that plague procurement are minimized, it also reduces the costs that come with those delays.

Ensuring Efficient Procurement with Lumaa

Born from a personal passion, seeing how procurement deficiencies can impact human lives, Madhumitha Somu Dinakaran has effectively found a way to transform this traditionally lengthy process by leveraging technology. Thanks to her work with Lumaa, businesses can submit proposals efficiently and stay competitive in the market, while organizations like hospitals can run efficiently with enhanced service quality and high standards of care.
