For Five Coffee Roasters is not just a company; it’s the fortuitous culmination of hard work and struggle of two lifelong friends, Stefanos Vouvoudakis and Tom Tsiplakos, who made rigorous efforts to achieve their dreams. Busied by adult life, studies, and jobs, the friendships that started in third grade still bore the same essence and connection thanks to their shared love for caffeine. And so they decided, “Why not turn it into a venture?” This is how Stefanos Vouvoudakis and Tom Tsiplakos established For Five Coffee Roasters in 2011, a 25,000 sq. ft. facility out of two buildings in Maspeth, which has now expanded into more than thirty cafes and roasting facilities across America, familiarizing caffeine aficionados with specialty coffee.
Analyzing the Remarkable Journey of For Five Coffee Roasters
With new cafés and locations gradually added to their business, For Five Coffee Roasters has come a long way. It all started when Stefanos, who had been working in the coffee business after college, found a lack of local roasters from New York. After working with a New Jersey-based supplier that supplied coffee to restaurants, diners, and other hospitality sectors and taking up a lead sales role, Stefanos had almost nine years of experience. They stayed current on the trends and innovations being led in the industry.
Tom, on the other hand, had a background in industrial linen, which enabled him to forge friendly relationships with hospitality ventures and learn about the food and beverage distribution network in New York. After proposing his idea to Tom, the duo set up their first Facility in Long Island City, Queens, where they spent the first six months perfecting their signature coffee blends in a modest workspace while linking up with New York’s trending and famous restaurants.
Collaborations and Expansions
The reputation of this local micro-roasting facility soon went off the charts after landing their first contract with Gotham Bar & Grill, and now public figures were sipping a brew of For Five Coffee there. In 2010, For Five Coffee Roasters made its retail debut by opening a cafe in Manhasset, Long Island.
Initially, Stefanos Vouvoudakis and Tom Tsiplakos focused on wholesaling roasted coffee, but with each subsequent expansion, their retail footprint expanded all over America. Driven by their entrepreneurial spirit, they have established a series of coffee havens at Manhasset, Garden City, Times Square, Brook Field Place, Whitestone, Boston, DC, Virginia and several other hot spots. Through their strategic expansion, the two friends have created a network of cafes in bustling urban centers that cater to coffee enthusiasts.
For Five Coffee Roasters is also forging strategic partnerships with other industry leaders to expand its reach and impact. For Five Coffee Roasters has secured a prominent retail space at 2001 Penn, an esteemed office building in downtown Washington, D.C., owned by Carr Properties. This marks For Five’s fourth café in the greater D.C. region, further deepening their partnership with Carr Properties. The café design draws inspiration from its New York roots, and alongside its specialty coffee, it offers a diverse food and pastry menu.
Sodexo, a food and facilities management leader, also did an exclusive 10-year partnership with For Five Coffee Roasters, which signifies that through this collaboration, For Five Coffee Roasters’ specialty coffee and artisan blends will be served across Sodexo’s corporate client sites in the United States and Canada. Sodexo recognizes For Five Coffee Roasters’ commitment to quality, collaboration, and hospitality and aims to enrich customer experiences in corporate dining with high-end, freshly roasted coffee.
Furthermore, For Five Coffee Roasters has established a strategic partnership with Loews Hotels, solidifying its position as the exclusive nationwide coffee supplier turning several Starbucks spots within Loews Hotels into For Five Coffee Roasters locations.
Stefanos Vouvoudakis, President and co-founder of For Five Coffee Roasters, says: “We’re excited to deploy our specialty cafes for both retail locations and our corporate clientele; our business is not only established on the love for quality coffee but also the people and the environment in which it should be enjoyed.”
The dynamic duo is betting on the growing demand for artisanal and customized varieties to popularize For Five Coffee Roasters’ signature blends. Following the instant success of For Five Coffee Roasters, Stefanos Vouvoudakis & Tom Tsiplakos have invested in an in-house bakery named For Five Bakehouse to pair their elevated coffee with artisanal pastries and their famous stuffed cookies.
