Flo Milli Goes Super Novo: “Female hip-hop” isn’t a genre any more than “all-female rock band” is a genre. That said, it’s been a joy to witness this era where powerful woman after powerful woman is rising within rap.

Cardi, Nicki, Megan, Doja, Coi, Saweetie, DreamDoll, Doechii and more and more — personally speaking, it feels like at least 80 percent of this writer’s favorite contemporary hip-hop artists are female. Flo Milli is yet another name for that illustrious list.

The Alabama-born rapper released her debut single in 2019 — “Beef FloMix.” “In the Party” soon followed, and then the Ho, Why is You Here? mixtape dropped in 2020. Her debut album, You Still Here, Ho? was released in 2022 and, just to continue that conversational theme, her next album will arrive soon with the title, Fine Ho, Stay.

“With over half a billion streams to date, 23-year-old, Alabama born rapper, Flo Milli has taken the world by storm in her short ascent,” reads her bio. “Releasing her first official track ‘Beef FloMix’ on her SoundCloud in late 2018, she had gone viral by early 2019 on TikTok, marking her breakout success and she hasn’t let up since. Releasing tracks and visuals throughout 2019, she followed up with ‘In The Party’ which has been streamed and viewed nearly 200 million times worldwide.”

At the Novo on Sunday night, she was phenomenal. The L.A. club crowd was absolutely primed for her before they walked in. An enthusiastic DJ pumped us up further, and opening act Maiya the Don dialed things up to 11.

The Brooklyn rapper, also known as Big Don as we were reminded throughout the set, put in a blinding performance. “Into Myself” was the highlight — a glorious example of bombastic self-love that sees Big Don spell out exactly why she’s utterly magnificent. We could see for ourselves, mind you.

But this is the Thanks For Coming Here, Ho tour, and Flo Milli is the star. Every single that we’d want to hear got an airing, with “Fruit Loop” and “Conceited” particular highlights. Milli covers the stage like a woman absolutely determined to make the most of these opportunities that she’s worked so hard for.

The Novo loved her, and the symbiotic feeding frenzy between crowd and artist was practically tangible. The set felt short but so very sweet. But this really feels like we’re at the beginning of something special.
