Flipper Brings in Watt: Old school San Francisco punks Flipper have, until recently, been fronted by Jesus Lizard man David Yow but that period is now over. Rather, SoCal punk icon Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Stooges) is in, which should make for an interesting set. NISS and Bridget & the Nameless also perform.

Flipper just recently performed at the Mosswood Meltdown in Oakland with the likes of Kim Gordon, Bikini Kill, the Dirtbombs, the Linda Lindas and Pansy Division.

Meanwhile, Flipper is yet another band on Mike Watt’s resume, a man who also plays with his own Missingmen and Secondmen bands. He told us in 2017 that, “There are three types of projects. The ones where you tell people what to do — write the music and tell them how to play it. Then there are the ones where you join a band and are told what to do, such as J. Mascis & the Fog, or The Stooges. And then there are the collaborations. The thing with the Italian guys is like that. I sent them some stuff with a bunch of holes in it to see how they’d fill them. They’re all different and they’re all adventures. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

Flipper Brings in Watt: The event takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 9 at the Observatory.
