In commemoration of 9/11, a team of 30 American and Australian firefighters are attempting a cross-country run from Los Angeles to New York. According to KPCC (89.3 FM), the “Tour of Duty” is a relay run with six hours of pounding the pavement and 12 hours off intermittently. The cycle continues for 24 hours a day until the runners reach New York City's Battery Park.
The team left Santa Monica Pier at 8:46 a.m. on Thursday. Runners will go to Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, New Orleans and Chicago before finishing in New York.
“If people come and visit us at the end, we'd love everybody to come out and meet us at the Brooklyn Bridge, on the Brooklyn side, and walk across with us on September 11th,” Paul Richie, an Australian firefighter told KPCC.
The firefighters are expected to arrive at New York on September 11. They will travel 4,600 miles by foot.
