Thankfully we're living in the midst of a cocktail revolution that thinks well beyond beer and customizes drinks for all occasions and people.

BLT Steak's Beverage Director Jared Heber will be mixing two holiday-specific drinks on Sunday. The Sugar Daddy is Heber's tweak on the Sidecar that substitutes traditional cognac with bourbon, and combines the spirit with the traditional triple sec, lemon juice, and sugar rim glass components. “I wanted a father's day drink with bourbon, but not your typical Old Fashioned or Manhattan,” Heber explains. “My wife actually is a bourbon fan, and I was a Sidecar fan, so it's something we started ordering. I like that the lemon lightens up the bourbon, making it refreshing, which is not usually an adjective one uses for bourbon — except a julep. It tends to be rounder and spicier than a traditional Sidecar, somehow making a drink with a sugar rim manly.” We're convinced.

We also trust that Heber's Old Spice cocktail turns Scotch, ginger juice, honey and lime into something decidedly not evocative of deodorant. Chef de Cuisine Brian Moyers' menu is also available, which is plentiful with burgers and meats, even if the restaurant's Kobe Burger season is over. 8720 W. Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, (310) 360-1950 or

For a nearly polar opposite vibe, the Downtown Down Home Dad's Day Brunch at Cole's on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. offers its usual $5 Mimosa, Bloody Mary, Bloody Bull, Irish Coffee, and sparkling wine options, but nothing else celebrates fatherhood like the Bloody Bull, which infuses a shot of Cole's au Jus into the Bloody Mary. 118 E. 6th St., Los Angeles, (213) 622-4090 or

In the same building as Cole's, The Varnish's Eric Alperin recommends the following classics according to parenting style and genre: For the Ad Dad: an Old Fashioned; Deadbeat Dad: Jack Daniels Whiskey Smash; 70's Swinger Dad: Gin Martinis (by the dozen); Goody-Goody Dad: A Gin Rickey; And for the Granddad: A Sazerac. 118 E. 6th St., Los Angeles, (213) 622-9999

Farther out west, Vincenzo Marianella gets into the spirit too at Copa d'Oro with serious stuff, like his Smoke of Scotland concoction. It's a special type who's interested in and can handle Laphroaig 10-year Cask Strength, Noilly Prat Extra Dry Vermouth mixed with St Germain Elderflower Liqueur. 217 Broadway, Santa Monica, (310) 576-3030 or

But remember, drinking with parents can either be a great bonding experience, or go fantastically wrong. So good luck!
