Artists and fans alike gathered at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica on Saturday, July 15, to celebrate 40 years of America's preeminent illustrated science fiction and fantasy magazine, Heavy Metal.

More than 150 pieces of art published in the magazine — as well as pieces inspired by the magazine — are on display through Aug. 19. Artists including Lorenzo Sperlonga, Chris Leib and Carin A. Hazmat showed up to be shot alongside their work. The opening also featured body painting, sculptural pieces and memorabilia, like original concept art.
