UPDATE at 2:32 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2015: Luxe Hotels doesn't deny the event is happening. Neither did a GOP official. More below. First posted at 5:39 p.m., Monday, July 6.
If you recently said that Mexican immigrants are criminals and “rapists,” we wouldn't advise coming to Los Angeles. About one of every two people in the county is Latino, mostly of Mexican descent. We wouldn't suggest it even for our worst enemy.
But a flier for a Los Angeles event purporting to feature Donald Trump, speaker of such incendiary comments, was forwarded to us today.
The July 10 dinner is being organized by Friends of Abe, a secretive Hollywood conservative group said to have been founded by actor Gary Sinise, if the information on the flier is to be believed. We reached out to Friends of Abe but were told by one representative that he or she was not authorized to speak.
The flier says the party is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel in Brentwood.
“The one and only Donald Trump will be joining us Friday, July 10th at the Luxe Hotel for dinner and insightful discussion,” the flier says. It calls Trump “the very definition of American success.”
A source says Friends of Abe events like this are by invitation only, and that guests are vetted. Friends of Abe boasts that it has about 1,800 members, including Pat Boone, Jon Voight and Kelsey Grammer.
We reached out to a spokesman for the hotel but were told he was out sick today.
When Trump announced his presidential candidacy June 16, he singled out Mexican immigration as his core issue. The backlash was fierce, and NBC Universal, Univision, Macy's and ESPN have, in some way or another, moved to cut ties with him.
UPDATE at 2:32 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2015: The publicist for Luxe Hotels sent us this statement from Amy Commans, general manager of the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel:
Events occur at our hotels regularly. The organizations who book these events are solely responsible for their speakers and their content.
