Fans heading to Dodger Stadium today will be getting more than just a season-opening game against the San Francisco Giants. In addition to new outfield video screens, an echo-minimizing sound system and expanded bathroom facilities across all levels, the 50-year-old stadium has upgraded its concession offerings to reflect even more local fare.
And the best news didn't even come from Dodger Stadium officials but from social media, which let it slip recently that L.A. beer brands are finally coming to Chavez Ravine.
During the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington, D.C., last week, a series of tweets revealed that two L.A.-based breweries — Golden Road Brewing and Fireman's Brew — signed contracts to have their beer (Point the Way IPA and Brunette, respectively) served at Dodger Stadium. And a photo that surfaced on Fireman's Brew's Facebook page over the weekend showed that Angel City Brewing also secured a tap for Eureka Wit at stadium serving stations, all just in time for Opening Day.

Though Fireman's Brew is technically contract-brewed in Northern California, Dodger Stadium's decision to include local craft beers in its 2013 lineup helps L.A. join the ranks of other sports arenas around the country that offer homegrown suds in addition to overpriced domestic macros like Bud and Coors.
Petco Park in San Diego, for example, currently has Ballast Point, Stone and Green Flash (among others) on draft, while Angel Stadium announced this time last year that it would begin serving beer from Bootlegger's Brewery in Fullerton and Hangar 24 in Redlands.
Other new concession items Dodger Stadium says it will be rolling out during the 2013 season include an all-beef (kosher?) Brooklyn Dodger Dog, burgers and street-style carne asada tacos, served con todo on warm corn tortillas.
Dodger Stadium reps have yet to return requests for comment, so we're not sure if the move for local beer and better food is a response to pressure from craft beer-loving fans or part of the new team president Stan Kasten's promise last year that the stadium “would be upgraded into the 21st century.”
Either way, we welcome the first of what we hope are a series of concession updates, even if they do for now snub Eagle Rock Brewery's made-in-L.A. beers and the ever-present bacon-wrapped hot dog.
