Your Shot, a no-experience-needed DJ competition and music academy from Australia and New Zealand, is making its debut in Los Angeles and New York this month, with online registration starting today.
Founded in Australia in 2010, the program has trained more than 12,500 participants across Australia and New Zealand. The program is designed for beginners and provides six weeks of training in DJ fundamentals — mixing, music selection and live performance — before contestants perform at sold-out showcase events with the potential to win a set at an international festival.
The U.S. launch will bring 200 participants in each city through its Academy where industry mentors offer hands-on instruction. The program emphasizes accessibility and community as much as competition, with founder and CEO Steve Pillemer calling it “a platform to challenge themselves, learn the basics, build a community outside their bedrooms, and take their passion for DJing and dance music to the next level.”
Past participants have performed at festivals like CRSSD in San Diego, Hideout in Croatia, BPM in Costa Rica, Snowbombing in Austria, Snow Machine in Japan, and Awake in Indonesia, with alumni that include the DJs Tigerlily, Sippy, and Go Freek. According to Your Shot, 62% of past participants now perform regular gigs or hold residencies.
The U.S. edition will be guided by advisors including producer and FEMME HOUSE co-founder LP Giobbi, Live Nation Vibee president Harvey Cohen, and The Circuit Group, a management company that reps Chris Lake and FISHER. Longtime partners such as JBL Audio, Pioneer and Red Bull continue to sponsor the program.
In-person selections take place Sept. 13 at Catch One in LA and Sept. 20 at Elsewhere in New York. Visit yourshotdj.com/us-registration to register.
