Two Culver City officers opened fire on a man who confronted them … right at their own police station.
That's the story from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department over the weekend: The suspect was fatally shot after pulling a gun on the cops in the Culver City Police Department parking lot early Saturday, deputies said:
Sounds like so-called “suicide by cop” to us, but the shooting was still under investigation.
According to the sheriff's department, the unidentified man confronted the two cops after they had returned to the station's parking lot at 4040 Duquesne Ave. about 7:40 a.m. Saturday.
The duo were wrapping up their shift when the suspect, who had entered the secured lot by following a police car inside, “produced a handgun,” deputies said.
According to a sheriff's statement:
… They saw the suspect walk into the facility through the facility's parking lot security gate. … The officers asked the suspect if he needed help.
The cops told the guy to drop his weapon, deputies said, but he didn't. In fact, he pointed the weapon at the officers, and they opened fire, according to the deputies' account.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff's department was called in to investigate the shooting.
