Crystal Walen, founder of Crystal W Design, is an artist and entrepreneur whose work brings richly textured, handcrafted patterns to the world of interior design. As an illustrative textile designer, she works with nature-based themes, translating them into wallpapers, fabrics, and one-of-a-kind projects.
Crystal’s path to founding her studio in Southern California traces through an upbringing that prized creative freedom and hands-on learning. She spent her early years experimenting with sewing, tailoring, and exploring color and pattern. Those formative experiences fostered a comfort with materials, from treasure-hunting and thrift store finds.
Her creative education broadened through formal study. In school, Crystal explored weaving and digital printing. As she moved into professional design life, her work with home decor products expanded her understanding of how artwork could be translated into products. Crystal notes, “I design wallpapers that help tell someone’s story.”
According to Crystal, her decision to focus on interior artistry reflects an interest in work that bridges fine art and conventional interior design. Rather than treating rooms solely as functional, she considers how texture, color, and botanical forms can shape the atmosphere of a space. Her approach is tactile and layered, combining watercolor washes, visible brushwork, and a sense of aged materiality. She believes homes may benefit from subtle artistic intervention and that thoughtful patterning can refresh a space without requiring a sweeping overhaul.

“My clients respond to my approach differently,” Crystal shares. “Some are drawn by the way my work brings warmth and personality to commonly used surfaces. Others appreciate the nostalgia and craft-forward details.” She often adapts existing designs to suit a project’s specific palette or scale, or creates entirely new work to answer a particular brief.
It’s worth noting that Crystal’s practice extends beyond bespoke wallpaper to include textiles and smaller accessories designed for everyday use. Many of her pieces originate from hand-painted works that are digitally adapted, ensuring the tactile qualities remain evident in the finished product. “I see myself as both an artist and an interpreter,” she explains. “I translate handwork into formats that can be lived with, whether on walls, fabrics, or personal items, while preserving the nuanced textures that first inspired me.”
Crystal hopes to extend partnerships with commercial collaborators and creative businesses. She is enthusiastic to collaborate on a small or large scale and hopes to make her design aesthetic more accessible to the retail market.
