Today represents the culmination of a 12-year journey from one state of mind to another — and it's perhaps not coincidental that the essence of that journey can be represented in the form of a man who has endeavored to overcome fear and uncertainty to reach a state of simply being. Tonight at Book Soup, Soto Zen priest Brad Warner discusses and signs There Is No God and He Is Always With You: A Search for God in Odd Places. Occasional punk and staunch supporter of “hardcore Zen,” Warner has for the past few decades pursued his understanding of inner peace and still contemplation through the study of Zen Buddhism, asking in his latest book, “Can Zen give us a way past our constant fighting about God?” Warner knows from fighting — he's been bassist for Akron punk combo Zero Defex, blogged for SuicideGirls and written five previous books on how Buddhist beliefs relate to divorce, sex, celibacy and other matters of material humanity. And what better, odder place to find God than in a bookstore? Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., W. Hlywd.; Wed., Sept. 11, 7 p.m.; free. (310) 659-3110, booksoup.com.
