Still miss Indie 103.1 FM? Feel like Jonesy's KROQ show just doesn't quite capture the droll magic -or the wonderfully wacky playlists- of yore? The spirit of Indie lives on the web station Indie1031.com and we dig it (particularly Bob Forrest's Wednesday set, and Sunday's entire line-up featuring Nativ Wayne, Full Metal Jackie and Suicide Girls).
But now it looks like the rebel soul -and many of the OG DJs- of the beloved radio station have taken siege of the net as well via Moheak.com. Which one's better? It's a close call.
Moheak was created by Indie's best known DJ, TK (the luggishly sweet, oft-hawked jock who held down mornings and afternoons daily -and more- when Indie was on the air) and some of the indie team has joined him: Paul V. (“Neon Noise” and “Mash-up of the Day”) now broadcasts Thursdays and all weekend (Fri and Sat), Darren Revell revives Big Sonic Heaven and is also the Music Director, and Dave Navarro, who moved his “Dark Matter” show from Indie online to Moheak a few months ago.
Most exciting are the new hosts Moheak has scored since its inception: Keith Morris and his “Totally Psyched” show, an all vinyl pshychedelic thrash fest and the inimitable Angelo Moore of Fishbone, whose “Angelo Show” is as unpredictable as you might expect. We've thought that Moore would make a great radio personality since his poetic ramblings and spazztastic rants on the rogue LA radio experiment from over a decade ago called Pirate Cat Radio 87.9, now based in San Francisco!
Other spinners will be familiar to nightlife and music heads: journalist/blogger/WCS contributor Kevin Bronson, who presents a sonic companion to his “Buzz Bands” blog, DJ Casper VonDJ (club and bar beatsmith around town), Marko DeSantis (from the band Sugarcult), and Lawrence Gjurgevich (host of long-running dance party, Club Underground at the Echo Fridays).
“We're all doing this for the love of the music. No one is getting paid,” said V., Saturday night at Smash Appeal, a dance party he threw to help raise funds and attention for Moheak (see above photo). “Every person who has airtime is bringing some great music to the global community.”
Good music's all “good,” but what we can get that on Pandora. What we like about Moheak is the free-form, random-feeling mix of '80's new wave, indie du jour and electro dance grooves. It's what made the terrestrial version of Indie so cool in the early days. Moheak is really rockin this way, but then again, so still, is Indie.
Here's some random samplings of what both stations played this Monday morning while we wrote this blog post.
Moheak: Elvis Costello, The Like, Adam Ant, Datarock, Broken Bells, Depeche Mode, Simian Mobile Disco, Interpol, Missing Persons, Joy Division, Crystal Method, Hockey, Bjork.
Indie1031: T-Rex, Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, Duran Duran, Harrper Blynn, Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Ra Ra Riot, The Melvins, The Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen.
The verdict? Tie. Great tunes to write by on both. Grudge-holders will probably prefer the totally DIY Moheak (Indie is still run by the Spanish station that killed it off the FM dial two years ago), but either way we say Monday morning music rules! We ♥ the internet.
