Busy Brain, whose real name is Michael Anao, emerges as one of the hottest new artists from the country, showcasing his eclectic and boundary-pushing sound.
Busy Brain delivers a new-age fusion of Afro-inspired sounds (i.e., Afrobeat, Afropop, Afro Swing, Afrofuturism, Afro R&B, Afro Drill, Afro Dancehall, and Afro Soul) that are vibrantly seductive. His ability to integrate these diverse influences into his music makes him stand out in the industry.
The passionate artist was always surrounded by music growing up. He developed a deep love for music from a tender age, often listening to songs on his headphones while doing his daily routines. His interest in music followed him through elementary and secondary school. The young Michael participated in singing competitions and school parties, earning the admiration of his peers. His parents have a different vision for him, however. They wanted him to pursue a stable career in engineering.
Committed to fulfilling his parents’ desires, Busy Brain earned a degree in petroleum engineering. Still, his heart remained with music. He, therefore, continued to hone his craft by performing at school events, allowing him to gradually build a reputation as a talented performer.
While diving deeper into the music world, Busy Brain has drawn inspiration from some of Nigeria’s most iconic artists. He was particularly influenced by Wizkid, who has the inherent talent of connecting with audiences. Olamide, celebrated for elevating street pop to mainstream recognition, is another major influence for the rising star, inspired by the former’s skill in blending different genres. In addition, Burna Boy’s storytelling and courage to integrate his personal experiences into his music resonated with Busy Brain, who saw parallels between their life journeys. These artists shaped his musical direction and motivated him to tell his story through music.
With such influences, Busy Brain crafted his own versatile sound, and this is evident in four of his recently released songs—“Fighting,” “Gimme Slow,” “Play Play,” and “Die Young (Tribute).” Each song illustrates different facets of his musical abilities, highlighting his capacity to play with various styles and genres.

“What makes my music unique is that it tells my story. It reflects my life and emotions. When I’m in a happy mood, I create a song that captures that feeling, and every time I play it, I’m transported back to that joy. Each song has a personal meaning to me—it’s my mood, my story, my pain, and my happiness,” Busy Brain shares.
The song “Fighting” is particularly resonant, as it reflects his resilience and ability to overcome life’s challenges. After losing his father at a young age, Busy Brain left home to ease his mother’s burden of raising five children alone. He worked hard to support himself through school and eventually relocated to Canada to pursue his music career. Essentially, “Fighting” captures his journey of perseverance and determination, making it a powerful anthem of survival and hope.
Another song Busy Brain especially cherishes is “Die Young (Tribute).” He chooses this as his favorite work as he dedicates it to his cousin Alinko and close friend and fellow artist Mohbad, both of whom passed away tragically. As portrayed in the song title, this heartfelt tribute is filled with raw emotions and a sense of loss that resonates with listeners.
“I want to create music people can relate to, especially during hard times. My songs encourage people to stay focused on their goals and inspire them to do more,” Busy Brain remarks.
These four songs, each with a distinct theme and style, are set to be part of Busy Brain’s debut EP, “Jambox.” Busy Brain promises to deliver everything the fans desire and expect in this album—versatility, emotional depth, and a unique blend of sounds. “Jambox” is bound to be a depiction of his growth as an artist and a celebration of his journey so far.
