“Truly, I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”  – Matthew 17:20

Spiritual references to moving mountains, whether literally (influence over your reality) or figuratively (overcoming challenges), have been pontificated for eons. The truest interpretation of the phrase, however, could be the one that resonates with you most personally. For director Aleksandar Jovic, it happens to be both the influence over reality and overcoming challenges. Jovic’s Beyond the Peak is a testament to the resilient nature of the human spirit and the power of faith.

Produced under Jovic’s company, One Light Films, the documentary follows the inspiring journey of David Rayman-Rajkovic and his Orthodox Christian mountain climbing club as they embark on a spiritual odyssey in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The film explores multifaceted themes of spirituality, brotherhood, and the ever-enduring connection between man and nature.

The main storyline of Beyond the Peak is David’s heartbreaking quest to honor his late brother by scaling Mount Blanca and the surrounding mountains. Despite coming from the flatlands of Indiana, David’s willpower and sheer resolve to climb in his brother’s memory is both incredibly awe-inspiring and deeply touching to witness. Each mountain his club climbs results in a deeper connection with their faith and their brotherhood. For him, “This is a place (the mountains) to find purpose for our life here on earth.” The film shows the intensely physical and emotional journey, offering viewers a glimpse into the extreme impact of loss and the healing power of nature.

Behind the scenes, one of the most extraordinary aspects of Beyond the Peak is the journey it traversed during its production. Shot in 2017 with a crew of only five people, including Jovic, the film was an incredible labor of love and perseverance. The team faced multiple difficulties, including the overall logistics of filming in remote, high-altitude locations and the physical demands of hiking, camping, and filming simultaneously. Still, despite these obstacles, the team’s relentless devotion to their craft shines through in every frame, resulting in a visually stunning and emotionally resonating film.

Beyond the Peak has already garnered critical acclaim on the festival circuit, winning the Best “Diaspora Documentary” Award at the Chicago Serbian Film Festival and Best Cinematography at the Great Lakes Christian Film Festival. The film has also received nominations for Best Director, Best Documentary Film, Best Film, and Most Inspirational at various festivals, showcasing its universal appeal and incredible impact.

As Jovic reflects on the journey of creating Beyond the Peak, he foresees a future where he continues producing high-quality, impactful films that resonate with audiences. His distinct storytelling approach, utilizing the ensemble cast, focuses on letting the characters tell the story, which helps the audience build a connection with the characters. Jovic takes this even further by seamlessly editing together old footage the mountaineers shot and footage his professional film crew captured. This unique blend of perspectives allows him to masterfully weave together a compelling story that truly emphasizes humankind’s spiritual connection with nature.

Beyond the Peak is a transformative experience that invites viewers to reflect on their own journeys and the figurative mountains they strive to climb in their own lives. As the film continues to screen worldwide, its message is one of hope, healing, and a reminder to never lose our faith, even if all you retain is a mustard seed.
