0 9 2With its slate of premieres, tributes and anniversary panels celebrating horror, sci-fi and dark genre films, Beyond Fest is a monster-sized movie event. The 10 day festival moved to the Mission Tiki Drive-In in 2020 due to pandemic, but it’s back this year with screenings taking in place at the Legion Theatre, Aero Theatre, and Los Feliz 3 now thru Oct. 11. Debuting highly anticipated films including Halloween Kills, The Black Phone, Lamb, Vortex, Titane, New York Ninja and Antlers, the popular film fest also boasts a 50th anniversary celebration of A Clockwork Orange, tribute to the work of Michael Mann and many more thrills and chills on screen and via conversations with the biggest names in the biz.

Julia Ducornau’s Titane (which won the Palme d’Or–the highest prize at Cannes Film Festival) will be shown in 35 mm at the Hollywood Legion Theater (with the director in attendance) and a drive-in screening will also take place simultaneously outside. Blumhouse’s Halloween Kills and The Black Phone screenings will see the film’s directors and an appearance by producer Jason Blum. Cannes buzz flick debut, Lamb, will have director Valdimar Jóhannsson and star Noomi Rapace on hand. Gaspar Noé’s Vortex (featuring Dario Argento himself) will be a hot ticket, as will the brand new V/H/S 94 with cast members in attendance, and a rare 35mm screening of the original found footage classic V/H/S. In addition to the Mann homage (featuring screenings of Collateral and Thief, with the master in attendance) other film greats will make appearances including VFX fave Phil Tippett (Mad God and Starship Troopers) and actor Udo Kier discussing Blood For Dracula (before a screening of a newly restored print).

Nodding to its cinematic sponsors, The Aero theater will be re-branded as “The Mubi Theatre” while the Los Feliz 3 will be called “The Shudder Theater” during the event, with the latter’s screenings free to the public. IFC Midnight and horror blog Bloody Disgusting are also involved and presenting weird and creepy classic screenings this week and next.

Attendees will need to present both proof of vaccination and a valid ID at the theaters to be admitted. (Last vaccination must be recorded as 2 weeks prior to the event). For those who want to a bit of Beyond, but don’t feel safe going to screenings yet, there’s a cool digital panel too: ‘Women In Horror: The Female Perspective,’ available to watch for free online from Oct. 1 online. Tickets and full line-up info at beyondfest.com and americancinematheque.com.
