They've made no secret of it: The folks in tony Beverly Hills don't want a subway under their precious high school (which inspired TV's 90210 and many a polo-shirted stereotype).

Well, it looks like Metro, the folks who are building the “Subway to the Sea” down Wilshire Boulevard, are leaning toward digging a huge tunnel under the campus near Century City anyway, at least if one its environmental impact reports is to be trusted.

The Beverly Hills Courier reports that it got a hold of the document, and that it indicates …

… “the BHHS tunnel would be choice.”

The Courier states the report …

… appears designed to build a factual case for the shart turn south from Wilshire Boulevard under BHHS to reach the Constellation station … The report then contains information about the ease of tunneling through oil fields (BHHS has an oil field underneath), lack of noice and vibration and “Why Operate Under Private Property.”

One other route west — the line will head from Koreatown to Westwood and eventually Santa Monica, mostly down Wilshire Boulevard — has been under consideration. (See a PDF map of the routes here).

Residents prefer a slightly northern route that wouldn't tunnel under the school (and a few homes) but would place a station at the north end of Century City, where studies indicate there would be fewer riders.

In another piece, the Courier reports that the local school district has hired Washington, D.C. firm Venable, headed by former U.S. Transportation Secretary James Burnley, to lobby against the under-campus route.
