Kathryn Bentley's luxury, folk-inspired Dream Collective line of jewels and handbag designer Clare Vivier's minimalist purses used to be roommates in the same retail space. But this year, both moved out into shops of their own, two doors down from one another — giving L.A.'s “it girls” two places to raid when their closets are feeling empty. Bentley has said that creating jewelry is like making tiny sculptures. She works with wood, bone, oxidized brass and antique African beads; she etches bracelets and rings with lines in tribal patterns or tiny Braille dots. The pieces in her Dream Collective line are understated but interesting, and affordable — they range from $40 to around $200. The pieces in her eponymous Kathryn Bentley line, made with smoky diamonds and 14 karat yellow gold, will take your breath and wallet away. On a recent visit, one young lady practically begged the saleslady to make her stop shopping. 1404 Micheltorena, Silver Lake. (323) 660-2000, dreamcollective.com.
