When you’re down at the beach around Marina del Rey, take a look around and you’ll see several great dive bars with a sense of history. If you think you know the Westside, you don’t if you haven’t been to Brennan’s Pub on Lincoln, an institution of sorts since 1972. The same owner/proprietor has been offering up cheap eats and generous drinks to whoever happens by: locals, horny college students, out-of-towners and the occasional celebrity. The $8 burgers, well drinks served in plastic cups and nightly cover bands make this place what it is … and, of course, the Thursday night turtle racing, running since 1976. Legendary, actually. Rules include “Don’t point at the turtles!” — or you’ll be fined. Another rule: “No shirt, no shoes, no service (turtles exempt from the shirt requirement).” You can bring your own turtle or rent one there for the races. The race is not so much about the turtles as about — well, you will just have to check it out! As a friend says, “The more you drink, the faster the turtles go.” 4089 Lincoln Blvd., Marina del Rey.
