Banc of California Stadium, as it has been known since the soccer stadium’s inception in 2018, is no more, with BMO Stadium taking over the name rights.

Bank of Montreal (BMO) bought the naming rights in 2023 and on Thursday announced the change for the home of the Major League Soccer 2022 champion Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC).

The bank, which carries branches in Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto, Canada, said it wants to help men’s and women’s soccer grow in the U.S.

“BMO is thrilled to forge this partnership with LAFC, which reinforces our bank’s commitment to growing the game of soccer across North America,” BMO Chief Strategy and Operations Officer, Cameron Fowler said in a statement. “Through BMO Stadium, we will share our passion for soccer and commitment to the Los Angeles community while bringing to life our Purpose, to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life. We look forward to supporting LAFC and its fans this season and beyond.”

The bank will also be a founding partner for the Angel City Football Club (ACFC), the National Women’s Soccer League team that shares the stadium with LAFC as an expansion team in 2022.

“Inspired by our purpose, to boldly grow the good in business and life, and driven by a commitment to progress and advancing gender equity in soccer, this partnership unifies BMO and ACFC in a common goal,” Fowler said. “As The Bank of Soccer, we are committed to growing the game across North America, founded upon a belief that by creating equal opportunities, we can inspire a new generation of players, leaders, and coaches to reach their full potential on and off the field. We are excited to share the bank’s passion for the game with Angel City FC and the Los Angeles community.”

The defending champion LAFC will have a friendlies match against Real Salt Lake, fresh off their MLS Cup victory last November.

The club will hold its first home game under the stadium’s new name Feb. 18 in a friendly against San Diego Loyal.

“Our partnership with BMO unites two organizations that share a vision and commitment to be leaders and forces for good in our community,” LAFC Co-President & CBO Larry Freedman said. “BMO Stadium is the premier outdoor arena in the Heart of Los Angeles, having established itself as a world class sports and entertainment venue that hosts iconic concerts, events and top-level soccer. We are excited to begin our partnership with BMO, and to welcome our fans, supporters and the people of the city of Los Angeles to BMO Stadium.”

LAFC has sold out every home game since its grand opening in 2018, adjacent to the Los Angeles Coliseum in Exposition Park.
