Santa Monica's Main St. institution Circle Bar reo Santa Monica's Main St. institution Circle Bar reopened May 22 under new ownership from local restaurateurs Mark and Addie Van Gessel, the team behind Hinano Cafe and Tavern on Main. Originally established in 1949, Circle Bar evolved from a neighborhood watering hole into a fixture of Santa Monica’s nightlife and music scene. Over the decades, its dimly lit atmosphere, packed dance floor, and oval-shaped bar attracted everyone from artists and musicians to locals, with late-night drop-ins including Jim Morrison, Truman Capote, Anthony Kiedis, Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr. The reimagined venue keeps the same floor plan it has had since 1949 while introducing upgrades to sound, lighting, and production. A new elevated DJ booth, “The Halo,” puts music at the center of the room, supported by a new sound system, enhanced lighting, and visual programming. The refreshed cocktail menu blends Circle Bar’s classic dive-bar spirit with new additions, alongside late-night offerings and daily Power Hour specials. @circlebar_sm Read the story and see the photos thru @laweekly ✍️ @michelestueven
