An arrest was made in the case of a man who was fatally shot in the street on Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue in front of shocked onlookers on a busy Saturday night. Video of the aftermath of the attack can be seen below.
The shooting happened about 11:40 p.m. Saturday as the likes of Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa attended a pre-Grammy Awards party at nearby Supperclub. There's no indication the club is connected to the violence, though it's the second murder in a year to talk place near that venue.
In fact, Hollywood Boulevard has been rife with shootings and stabbings in recent years. The most notable recent example happened just before midnight on Jan. 4 in the 1600 block of Cahuenga Boulevard when the target of an attempted street robbery was fatally shot in front of a group of onlookers that included an off-duty cop who led responding officers to a suspect.
About a month before that, on Dec. 5, officers approached a man with a knife at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue and opened fire, killing him.
On Halloween night in 2012 three people were shot at Hollywood Bouelvard and Whitley Avenue as revelers packed the area.
The victim in Saturday's violence was reportedly shot in the back of the head. Early, disturbing video of the immediate aftermath of the attack showed the man face down in the street as an officer comes up and turns him around to check his vital signs. That video, posted to Instagram, was taken down over the weekend.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement. Separate video showed first-responders in an ambulance administering CPR.
The shooter ran north on Las Palmas, authorities initially said.
The suspect was identified by police Sunday as 23-year-old Michael Vincent Carter, whom the LAPD described in the statement as “a San Fernando Valley gang member.”
He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, cops said. L.A. Sheriff's Department inmate records show that a man with the same name and a similar age has multiple arrests.
Two men who were with the victim when he was shot are being sought as witnesses, police said. Anyone who saw what happened or who has background on the case was urged to call detectives at 213-382-9470.
