Alexi Wasser is a real-life Carrie Bradshaw, only funnier, indier and nastier. Like the fictional Sex and the City columnist, the pretty, page boy–coifed L.A. native offers a shameless exploration of relationships, love and, yes, sex on her blog IMBOYCRAZY.COM. But instead of glamorizing fashionable lives, she takes a rawer approach, one she calls “a pep talk in the form of a slap in the face in the form of a blog.” Filtered through and focusing on the writer herself, Wasser's blog examines some very real female concerns seldom talked — or blogged — about, and they run the gamut, from body-image insecurities and feeling horny to grooming. (“Wax your vag!” “Put on mascara!”)
Provocative prose, anecdotes and man-obsessed misadventures as well as video profiles of crush-worthy guys (“Dude of the Day”) make for guilty-pleasure Web fodder for the most part, but it's her site's weekly “Blind Leading the Blind” Top 10 lists that take it beyond sassy sex blog into girl-power-driven motivational territory. Call it unconventional BFF-style self-help:
1. The quickest way to feel better about yourself is to throw some clothes on, go outside and look around! Have you seen the scary monsters out there?! 2. Treat yourself like you're your own child. 3. Don't forget to touch yourself! This includes: finger-banging yourself … or just patting yourself on the back! Cuz why not?! You've earned it, buddy!
The 29-year-old scribe and actress — you may have seen her getting her “sensation” on in the currently running Peppermint Pattie TV commercials — is refreshingly unrestrained. After all, she wrote an open letter to P. Diddy telling him he was a “sexy-babefox” — and got a response! Currently single and “on a break” (though she did “make out with two guys last month, so I guess it's not really a break”), she's not wanting for admirers, especially young women obsessed with her blog. IMBOYCRAZY has spawned a host of related projects, too: a book, podcasts for MuchMusic out of Canada (on which she dispenses love and life advice), a radio show and a TV show in development, which she describes as “Sex and the City meets Curb Your Enthusiasm, with a touch of My So-Called Life.” Expect all of the above to have Wasser's uniquely wacky blend of self-deprecating humor and explicit moxie.
“If I'm scared of what people are going to say the next day, then I'm happy with my post,” she says of her uncensored style. Still, Wasser's no-holds-barred charm might soon affect the very topic she explores most: her love life. SATC never showed how the guys felt about their intimate deets being put out there in black and white for all to see, but in real life, it's something Wasser (who happens to be the daughter of a member of '80s girl rockers Precious Metal) admits she'll have to deal with, especially as her profile rises. “It will have to take a really strong guy who's confident enough not to worry about it, I guess,” she says.
