You want that in-home washer and dryer. Everybody does.
But once you find out how much it will cost you, at least if you're a renter, you'll think twice about the conveniences offered by your funky neighborhood laundromat.
The folks at real estate site Trulia looked at its rental listings in America's 13 largest markets and concluded that units with their own individual washers and dryers command 10 percent more in rent than units without them.
Los Angeles, of course, is the city with the highest dollar premium for washer- and dryer-equipped apartments, the site found. We already have the least affordable rental scene in America, so this is no surprise.
According to a Trulia statement:
For Los Angeles specifically, renters pay an average of $325 extra for an in-unit washer and dryer, one of the largest premiums compared to the other major rental markets.
Ouch. Makes you want to let those jeans fester just a little bit longer.
We beat Boston ($255 extra), San Francisco ($245), Philadelphia ($211) and New York ($175) when it comes to washer-dryer rent premiums.
Trulia produced a rental map of L.A. that shows the areas with the highest concentrations of in-home washers in darker green. It turns out Santa Monica, Pasadena, Studio City, Little Tokyo, Skid Row and the Arts District are the places you want to be for this amenity, according to the site.
Woodland Hills, View Park-Windsor Hills, Wilshire Center and Koreatown are the places where you'll find the fewest washer-dryer–equipped units listed, Trulia says.
So is it worth the cost of a car payment to have a washer and dryer in-house? Here's how Trulia puts it:
Assuming that you do 10 lbs. of laundry per week, you will spend $40 per month. If you opt for cheaper, coin-operated machines, at $3 a load you’ll pay at least $12 a month.
