Lior Suchard has spent years captivating audiences across the globe by doing something deceptively simple: paying attention. Known internationally as one of the world’s leading mentalists, Suchard blends psychology, intuition, and performance into live experiences that leave audiences questioning how much control they really have over their own thoughts. From heads of state to Hollywood insiders, he’s amazed some of the most powerful people on the planet, but it’s his live shows with everyday audiences where the real magic happens.
Suchard returns to Los Angeles for a unique one-night performance at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre on January 13. Ahead of the event, Suchard took some time to discuss his craft, the unpredictability of live performance, and why Los Angeles holds a special place in his heart.
How do you describe what you do to someone seeing your work for the first time?
As a mentalist, I always say to people, I don’t know what you are thinking, but I do know how you are thinking. I use my five senses to create the experience of a sixth sense, a seventh sense, and an eighth sense, using body language reading, non-verbal communication, subliminal messages, and influencing and reading people. For me, the most important thing is the interaction with the audience and being a part of the show. People need to enjoy, people need to be amazed, people need to wonder – that’s why I call it the art of astonishment and master mentalism.
Do things ever go wrong when you’re performing, and what do you do?
Of course, I’m only human, and what I do is not accurate science. The most important thing is the factor of entertainment. Luckily for me, I feel professional enough to make fun of myself, have fun with the entire audience, and act right after it. If something goes wrong, I turn it into something positive, fun, and entertaining for the audience.
You’ve performed around the world for leaders, celebrities, and everyday audiences alike. What continues to excite you about stepping on stage?
I get asked pretty often, “Don’t you get sick of it? Are you still excited? Are you nervous?” So, the answer is yes; I get excited, I get nervous, and I’m afraid. It’s a good thing, because it means I love what I do. It doesn’t matter if they are billionaires or someone who has just bought a ticket to my show; everybody becomes a child again, they have wonder, and they are amazed and blown away. It gives them hope and inspiration, shows them how amazing the mind is, and reminds them that nothing is impossible, and that’s what keeps me excited every time I step on stage.
You’re returning to Los Angeles for a special performance at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. What can LA audiences expect from this show, and what makes performing in Los Angeles unique for you?
This show is going to be like no other show I’ve done before, with full audience participation – literally, each member of the audience is going to be a part of the show.
I prepared new creations, ideas, and concepts that will completely blow their minds, both on stage and off the stage. What makes it special for me is that this is my first public show of this kind in Los Angeles. I’ve done many corporate and private events here, but never on this scale. Knowing that people come, buy tickets, arrange their evening, and choose to spend their time with me is something I truly cherish, and I’m going to give them the best show they have ever seen in their lives.
