The South Florida film scene continues to gain momentum, with independent collectives playing a central role in its development. One of the most active is the White Elephant Group (WEG), a network of more than 20 artists working across film, digital media, and visual arts. Since 2019, Venezuelan filmmaker Camila Marcano has been a member, contributing both creatively and organizationally to the group’s projects.

Festival and Production Experience

Marcano, a graduate of the New York Film Academy South Beach, has directed and produced short films that have screened at international festivals including the Miami Film Festival, New York Latino Film Festival, BFI London, and the San Diego Latino Film Festival. Her work often focuses on personal storytelling that connects with wider audiences.

Her production credits extend to mainstream television and music videos. She has worked on MTV’s Jersey Shore Family Vacation, Bravo’s Family Karma, and videos for Latin music artists such as CNCO, Reik, Sech, Kenia OS, and Mau & Ricky. These experiences have allowed her to navigate both independent and commercial sides of the industry.

White Elephant Group’s Mission

The White Elephant Group was formed to amplify voices from minority and underserved communities in South Florida. Rather than operating as a conventional production company, WEG functions as a collaborative collective, bringing together filmmakers, artists, and media professionals to share resources and highlight local perspectives. Aiming to create safe spaces for everyone to connect and have conversations about the craft, hoping to create a collaborative environment for those trying to make meaning of their journey as artists.

Camila Adds “Being an artist is hard. Sharing a story means sometimes exposing your most vulnerable side, and that’s never easy. But the beauty of doing it with the support of your community is knowing you’re not alone. There will always be someone in the room connecting with your film—and the key is understanding that even if it’s only one person, you’ve already won.”

WEG continues to expand its slate of community-focused events throughout the year. Marcano plays a vital role in these ongoing programs, contributing to their success by helping to organize, managing ticketing and box office operations, and supporting sponsorship and logistics efforts across the many events presented by the collective.

Growing Recognition

Both Marcano and the collective have gained attention from regional and international outlets. Coverage in publications such as the Miami Herald, Artburst Miami, British Cinematographer, and Diario de las Américas has underscored the growing visibility of Miami’s independent film community and the role of groups like WEG in shaping it.

Looking Ahead

As Miami continues to expand as a center for film and cultural production, Marcano’s work and the White Elephant Group’s projects reflect a commitment to broadening the range of stories coming from the region. With a combination of festival recognition, industry experience, and community engagement, their contributions mark an important chapter in South Florida’s evolving film landscape.
