Daily Bread, one of bass music’s most beloved mixtape masters, brought the Fonda Theater to life last Friday, April 4, on the Los Angeles stop of his North American Flash Flood tour.

A rainbow spectrum of lights danced across the Fonda Theater in perfect sync with Daily Bread’s wobbling bass-driven beats and a full floor of adoring fans grooving along. Daily Bread, full name Rhett Whatley, kept the energy high as concert-goers got down until the venue called for curfew. Despite a full dance floor front to back, the crowd left plenty of space for each other to dance and express themselves — twirling LED flow toys and swinging their bodies along to the soulful sounds.

Rhett made sure to keep the room bouncing throughout his entire 90-minute set, artfully sprinkling in fan favorites — his “Million Dollar Baby” remix from his most recent mixtape in the first quarter of the set, and his wonky hit “Snickerz” from his 2023 full-length album “Invisible Cinema” launching into the last half hour. Just as I thought the crowd couldn’t get more electric, Daily Bread closed with a handful of back-to-back hits including his iconic remix of “Walk it Out” by Unk and his most popular track to date, “Next Level Style.”

Attending the Flash Flood tour in Los Angeles really reminded me why I fell in love with electronic music, and specifically bass music, back in my teenage years. Within minutes of arriving at the venue, fans had offered me little trinkets and sprout clips to wear. I received countless high-fives, smiles, and fist-bumps throughout the night. In a big city known for fame and freeways, Rhett’s show served as a strong reminder to me that in these niche pockets of music, kindness and free expression are still very much alive. The warmth of the show and, of course, the grooves provided by the man himself, left me smiling ear-to-ear all the way home.

The Flash Flood tour, named after Daily Bread’s highly anticipated and cherished mixtapes Flash Flood and Flash Flood II, brings the eclectic, soulful sounds of the producer’s tracks to life in an environment where listeners can let loose and get down to his funky beats. Whatley is not alone on his tour either, with emerging bass artists Maddy O’Neal and Josh Teed joining for the majority of his West Coast run.

Whatley, hailing from Atlanta, started producing 10 years ago in his bedroom. Having a background in jazz guitar and a passion for crate-digging, Whatley masterfully fuses elements of his soulful background with modern electronic production to cultivate a distinguishing, vintage-meets-modern sound that has catapulted him to the forefront of the bass music scene in recent years.

Daily Bread has headlined Envision Festival in Costa Rica, as well as played many notable festivals stateside including Electric Forest and the Do LaB stage at Coachella. Though the Flash Flood tour is winding down, he has a couple major festival appearances lined up for the summer — Ubbi Dubbi in Dallas and North Coast Festival in Chicago. Daily Bread also just announced two headlining evenings at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO coming up this fall.
