Bay area’s Tanukichan, the genre-bending rock project of Hannah van Loon, packed out the Troubadour Monday, Oct. 28, for the sold-out LA stop of her Circles Tour, supporting the new EP released in September.

The band — made up of van Loon on vocals and bass; Joe Lyle on drums and vocals; Bee Wright on guitar and vocals; and Natalie Ho on guitar, keys and vocals — tore through their 18-song set, delivering dreamier shoegaze hits that defined her earlier career from albums Sundays and GIZMO, as well as heavier tracks from the new EP Circles, which strikes a grittier note.

Hits from Sundays “This Time” and “Hunned Bandz” were crowd pleasers and high-intensity standouts from Circles “City Bus” and “It Gets Easier” brought the heat before closing out with the hypnotic “Circles.” 

“This was not my first time playing in LA, but it was amazing to play, and sell out the Troubadour. It’s a beautiful venue and I’m so honored to have been able to play there. I felt so welcomed by everyone and it’s amazing to be at this point now after starting this project about eight years ago, and playing in bands for more,” van Loon said.

Just as the band took the stage, someone yelled “Go Dodgers!” from the packed crowd, generating a scatter of woos — the team had just won the third game of the World Series minutes before. Said van Loon, “I didn’t know that the Dodgers had just won, but I’m glad it was a good day for Dodgers fans. I wish I had been aware! I used to watch the Giants growing up in SF so I have some baseball love.”

Regional sports allegiances aside, the LA crowd was giddy for the band and Tanukichan thoroughly delivered.
