Fashion is a form of expression that goes beyond mere clothing. Our fashion choices speak to our personal identity, cultural representation and societal dynamics. At its finest, fashion extends beyond superficiality and serves as a visual language that showcases societal changes, reflects progress, and promotes innovation and inclusivity. That’s where designer Izzy Camilleri, CEO and Founder of IZ Adaptive, soars to the occasion. Not just a designer of beautiful and functional adaptive clothing but an innovator with an imperative patented design that has the potential to change millions of lives and likely save lives, too.

While most of us have the luxury of waking up, getting dressed in whatever we feel like, and not giving it much thought, millions of people living with disabilities don’t. Traditional clothing poses numerous challenges for individuals living with disabilities, particularly those who use wheelchairs. The discomfort caused by ill-fitting garments designed for standing frames can lead to issues like clothing riding down, life-altering and dangerous pressure sores and compromised circulation. Even closures, such as buttons and zippers, become obstacles for many, making the simple act of dressing a significant challenge.

Izzy explains, “For people sitting all day long, pants can be really uncomfortable because they’re designed for a standing frame. So what happens when we sit is our jeans cut into our gut. They ride down at the back. The other thing is that back pockets can cause a pressure sore, so our skin is at risk. People often, and this isn’t specific to a wheelchair, but people that have dexterity issues, even someone who’s had a stroke, for example, doing up a regular button can be challenging for someone. So closures are an issue.”

Footwear is also challenging, with swelling feet and limited options for those who spend extended periods in wheelchairs. Thankfully, Izzy and IZ Adaptive recognize these challenges and are dedicated to creating fashions that inspire beauty, self-expression, professionalism, and joy and provide comfort, ease, and functionality.

As adaptive clothing is recognized in fashion, significant brands have finally entered the market with capsule collections. However, IZ Adaptive is a fully committed adaptive clothing brand. “I started this category in the fashion world in 2009 when we first launched, way, way, way before the curve,” Izzy explains.

Not only is Izzy decades ahead of the competition, but IZ Adaptive is extended past a limited-edition collection of adaptive clothing items and instead boasts a comprehensive range of fashion options for men, women, and non-gender specific coats, pants, tops, suits and more (including shoes created by another designer)—each item meticulously designed for adaptability and inclusivity.

IZ Adaptive isn’t playing in the inclusivity and adaptability fashion arena; this is what and who they are–they are the arena. “This is more than a fashion brand…. It’s a necessity for people living with a physical disability.” The brand and Izzy have become well-known allies to the community, actively engaging and supporting its members. This deep connection sets IZ Adaptive apart as a brand not just for profit but for purpose.

Part of Izzy’s purpose has been to focus on solving a pain point for many users of wheelchairs. She explains, “The center seam in the back of pants has the potential to be very dangerous, particularly for individuals who spend extended periods sitting. The pressure exerted by the seam, especially in densely stitched fabrics like denim, can lead to serious health risks, including the penetration of the tailbone through the skin (pressure points), similar to the development of bed sores in the elderly. This pressure point, if not addressed, can result in infections, worsening skin conditions, and, in extreme cases, life-threatening complications like sepsis. Of course, many people who are paralyzed and use a wheelchair cannot feel if a pressure sore is starting.”

She adds, “When I started designing adaptive clothing, so many people were asking me to create a seamless black pant, and I didn’t think it was possible because that seam is integral to the cut of a pant for many reasons. And so I didn’t think it was possible.” She pondered a solution for years, and finally, during the quietness of the COVID pandemic, as she stared at a pattern, the solution came to her. Her patented adaptive pant design helps mitigate those risks.

“People who sit for long periods have to monitor how long they are sitting. When one of the medical advisors on the initial pant design research saw our IZ Seamless Technology ™ Pant for the first time, she screamed with joy and amazement, knowing the difference these pants would make for her patients. Another advisor who had almost died from his pressure sore said these pants would allow him more independence and freedom. Freedom to feel safer in his pants and free from worry. These pants are a ‘Game Changer.’”

IZ Adaptive’s bestsellers include the Game Changer collection and jeans, chinos, and sweats—everyday basics designed with a keen understanding of the challenges faced by those who use wheelchairs or live with other disabilities.

The functionality of IZ Adaptive’s clothing extends beyond its seamless designs. Fabric choices prioritize stretch for comfort, including a waistband that acknowledges the unique physical considerations of users of wheelchairs. Features like magnet zippers enhance functionality, making dressing and undressing more accessible for those with mobility challenges. Considerations for individuals with cognitive issues are essential to IZ Adaptive’s design process.

IZ Adaptive’s initiatives extend beyond the realm of clothing by introducing an affiliate program. This program invites individuals to become affiliates, expanding IZ Adaptive’s reach and impact. The 10% commission incentivizes advocates to share the brand with their networks, creating a community-driven approach to spreading awareness and accessibility.

Ultimately, fashion is a powerful and ever-evolving facet of the human experience, shaping how individuals perceive themselves and engage with the world. It could be said that it is even more powerful for people who are living with disabilities. Fortunately, fashion designer Izzy Camilleri answered the call to create beautiful and functional clothing; ultimately, she benefited, too. “My whole outlook on life completely changed when I turned my focus from runway fashion to dressing those who live with a disability.”
