When the temperature starts to drop, it’s time to start thinking about how to stay warm. But who can think about cranking the heater in this economy?! Some people are naturally blessed with the ability to withstand cold temperatures, but for the rest of us, there are a few things we can do to make sure we don’t turn into human popsicles. Here are six ways to stay warm without turning on your heater.

1. Layer up

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s worth repeating. Wearing multiple layers of clothing trap heat close to your body, keeping you warmer for longer. When layering, start with a base layer of thin clothes that will wick away moisture, followed by a thicker middle layer for insulation, and topped off with a waterproof outer layer.

2. Invest in some quality winter gear

If you live in an area with cold winters, it’s worth investing in some quality winter gear. A good pair of snow boots will go a long way towards keeping your feet warm and dry, and a heavy coat will do wonders for protecting you from the wind and cold. It’s also a good idea to invest in some thermal underwear; there’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re being pricked by thousands of tiny needles every time the wind blows.

3. Drink hot beverages

Drinking hot beverages is a great way to warm up from the inside out. From coffee and tea to hot chocolate and cider, there’s a hot drink out there for everyone. Just make sure you don’t drink too much caffeine, as it can actually have the opposite effect and make you feel more chilly.

4. Get moving

Staying active is another great way to stay warm in the winter. Exercise increases your internal body temperature, so even if it’s cold outside, you’ll be nice and toasty once you start moving around. Just make sure you dress appropriately for whatever activity you choose; there’s nothing worse than being all sweaty and then having to face the cold again.

5. Stay hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated in the winter just as much as it is in the summer. Dehydration can cause all sorts of problems, from headaches and fatigue to constipation and dizziness. So make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids—aim for eight glasses of water per day—and replenish electrolytes by eating foods like bananas or drinking sports drinks after strenuous activity.

6. Limit alcohol intake

While it might seem counterintuitive, drinking alcohol actually causes your body to lose heat more quickly. That’s because alcohol dilates your blood vessels, which causes your internal temperature to drop. So if you’re looking to stay warm this winter, it’s best to limit your alcohol intake (sorry).

These are just a few tips for staying warm this winter; hopefully they’ll help you get through the season without turning into an icicle! Remember to dress in layers, invest in quality winter gear, drink hot beverages, get moving, stay hydrated, and limit your alcohol intake—and you should be able to survive anything Old Man Winter throws your way!
