The murder of a skateboarder in Echo Park over summer shocked the gentrifying neighborhood. It happened on a bustling Friday night in August.

Twenty-two-year-old Carlos Arellano was walking with his board under his arm and his girlfriend at his side when three suspects attacked him over the ride and he was ultimately stabbed to death, according to police. The streets were filled with party-goers attending Echo Park Rising music festival events.

But detectives have yet to track down the three. Today local city Councilman Mitch O’Farrell and the Los Angeles Police Department plan to announce a $50,000 reward in the case, the LAPD said.

It's not a 100 percent done deal. O'Farrell must ask his colleagues on the council to approve a motion that would make the cash available in the event someone comes forward with key info that leads to the arrest and conviction of the murderer.

But council approval usually a matter of routine. The announcement will be made at 10 a.m. at City Hall, according to the LAPD.

Police say the stabber was a man in his early 20s, but they offered little else in the form of a description.

The attack was reported at 11:25 p.m. on Aug. 15 in the 1500 block of Sunset Boulevard, detectives said. An “altercation” ended with Arellano on the ground with stab wounds, they said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

In September Los Feliz's Kingswell skate shop organized a benefit skateboarding contest in Arellano's memory.
