Prepare for major street closures and start rerouting your usual commute: The L.A. Marathon is upon us. The race begins the morning of Sunday, March 9, and goes from Dodger Stadium to the Pacific. What exactly do these (possibly crazy) people eat to fuel a 26.2-mile run? (And the rest of us, who will be cheering them on, or thinking about running rather than actually putting on the shoes for it.)
You're probably familiar with the usual contenders – simple carbs like pasta, bread and bagels are at the top of most runners' lists. But the folks at GrubHub, the online and mobile food-ordering company, took a look at various runner-friendly foods that Angelenos order more of than the rest of the nation.
5. Cottage cheese
Compared to the rest of the country, it turns out that L.A. diners are 400% more likely to order cottage cheese. Who knew we loved this salty, oddly textured snack so much?
Cheap, portable and perfectly packaged, perhaps it makes sense that Angelenos are 52% more likely to consume this fruit before a race, or otherwise, than diners elsewhere.
We seem to love our dairy products. The second milky food to make the list is yogurt, which is 48% more popular in L.A. than throughout the rest of the nation.
Turns out we love being green in more ways than one. Salads are ordered 36% more often in this town than in other parts of the country.
Diners in L.A. are 35% more likely to order water than the rest of the nation. Ironic, since we're in a massive drought and much of the rest of the country has been buried in snow all winter.
