Maybe you’re doing Sober October. Or maybe you’ve given up alcohol for the myriad of reasons we all consider at some point or another. Just because you’re sober, doesn’t mean your social life has to suffer. In fact, there are plenty of things to do on a Friday night that don’t involve alcohol. From going to the movies to exploring your city, here are 10 fun and sober activities to help you make the most of Sober October.

1. Going to concerts can be a great sober activities

Live music is always a good time, regardless of whether or not you’re drinking. Plus, there’s something about being in a crowd of people that makes concerts extra special. So next time your favorite band comes to town, don’t be afraid to buy a ticket and go enjoy the show.

2. Visit a museum

Museums are great places to learn about new things and get lost in another world for a couple of hours. They also usually have cafes where you can grab a bite to eat before or after exploring the exhibits.

3. Catch a movie

Going to the movies is one of the classic date night activities for a reason—it’s fun! Whether you go by yourself or with friends, you’re guaranteed to have a good time at the cinema. Just make sure to get there early so you can snag your favorite seat in the theater.

4. Have a picnic in the park

Picnics are perfect for spring and summer days when the weather is nice. All you need is some food and drinks, along with a blanket or two, and you’re good to go! If you want to make things extra special, you can even pack some games or activities to do while you’re enjoying the outdoors.

5. Recruit some friends for a game night

Game nights are always enjoyable, whether you’re playing classic board games or trying out some new ones. They’re also a great way to bond with friends and family members who share your interest in gaming. And if someone gets too competitive, there’s always alcohol-free beer or soda to help take the edge off.

6. Go bowling

Bowling is another classic activity that’s great for groups of friends or couples looking for something to do together. It’s also relatively inexpensive, which is always a bonus. If you really want to impress your date, try wearing bowling shoes that match their outfit!

7. Volunteer your time

Doing something good for others is always rewarding, and it’s even more gratifying when you can do it with your friends by your side. Volunteer opportunities abound—you just have to find one that matches your interests and schedule. Check out websites like VolunteerMatch or idealist.org to get started.

8. Visiting farmer’s markets are great sober activities

Farmer’s markets are great places to find fresh produce, homemade goods, and other local items—plus, they’re usually held outdoors, which makes them perfect for sunny days spent strolling around with friends or family members.

9. Host or attend a potluck dinner party

Potluck dinners are low-key affairs where each guest contributes one dish to share with everyone else. They’re perfect for large groups of people and provide an opportunity for guests to showcase their culinary skills—or lack thereof! If you’re feeling extra ambitious, you can even host your own potluck dinner party and assign themed dishes accordingly. No need for alcohol to spoil this party.

10. Have coffee (or tea) at a new café

Trying new cafés is one of our favorite things to do on lazy weekends—it’s the perfect excuse to relax with a good book or conversation while enjoying some delicious coffee (or tea). And since most cafés have free wi-fi, it’s also an excellent place to get some work done or just chill with some friends.
