17-Year-Old Boy Dead, Woman Arrested after DUI Scooter Crash near South Street

LONG BEACH, CA (May 14, 2024)Brandon Cabrera was killed and Karen Mativa was arrested early Sunday morning, after a DUI scooter crash on Orange Avenue.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m., near South Street. 

According to Long Beach police, Mativa was driving a northbound 2012 Cadillac SUV when he struck a teen riding a scooter. Upon impact, the SUV driver continued north and eventually crashed into an apartment building.

First responders transported the teen to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities later identified the deceased victim as 17-year-old Brandon Cabrera.

After the crash, police arrested the Cadillac driver, who had initially fled the scene on foot. Officials have booked 35-year-old Mativa, of Compton for felony DUI, hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.

Long Beach officials are asking anyone who witnessed the fatal DUI crash to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
