89-Year-Old Man Fatally Injured in Two-Car Accident on Country Road L

DAWSON COUNTY, TX (May 13, 2024)Rex Zant was killed Thursday afternoon, and John Villalobos sustained injuries in a red-light crash on U.S. 87. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m., near County Road L on May 2nd.
According to reports, Villalobos was driving a 2023 Toyota Camry southbound on the freeway and failed to stop at a red light at the intersection. Consequently, the Toyota collided with an eastbound 2019 GMC Acadia on County Road L, being driven by Zant. Paramedics promptly arrived at the scene and transported 89-year-old Zant, a resident of Lamesa, to Medical Arts Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Furthermore, emergency crews attended to 37-year-old Villalobos, from Lubbock, and transported him to UMC Lubbock for further treatment of serious injuries. During the cleanup and initial investigation, emergency personnel temporarily closed off the surrounding area. Authorities have not provided any additional information, and the investigation remains ongoing.
