Two Pronounced Dead after Head-On Collision near Palomar Street Exit

CHULA VISTA, CA (May 14, 2024) – A teenager and a woman were killed early Wednesday morning, in a wrong-way collision on southbound Interstate 5.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m., near Palomar Street.

According to reports, witnesses saw a speeding red Honda Civic heading north in the southbound lanes near Camino De La Plaza. Soon after, the wrong-way driver collided head-on with an oncoming Dodge Challenger just north of Palomar Street.

The impact caused one of the vehicles to catch fire. First responders arrived and pronounced the 16-year-old boy driving the Challenger and the 67-year-old San Diego woman driving the Civic dead at the scene. Police have not yet released the identities of those involved.

Chula Vista officials issued a SigAlert around 4:15 a.m., diverting traffic off the freeway. Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 to contact the CHP San Diego office at 858-293-6000.
