44-Year-Old Motorcyclist Dies in Five-Vehicle Collision near Carpenter Street

CARMEL, CA (May 16, 2024) – Ricardo De Orta-Garcia died early Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash on Highway 1. Authorities responded to the northbound lanes of the freeway just south of Carpenter Street on May 12th at approximately 5:50 a.m. The investigation revealed that a 17-year-old male driving a black Ford F-150 was traveling south when he crashed into a utility pole. The Ford eventually came to a stop in the southbound lanes. The collision caused wires from the pole to scatter across the highway, leading to four additional vehicles colliding. Among the involved vehicles was a red and black Honda CBR1000 motorcycle driven by 44-year-old Orta-Garcia. Investigators confirmed that all vehicles were traveling southbound. Despite life-saving efforts, medics pronounced 17-year-old Orta-Garcia dead at the scene. The 17-year-old driver was detained but later released to his parents. It is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision, and the investigation is ongoing.
