Yu-Heng Chen, known professionally as Howard, is a senior merchandising expert whose career has been defined by a unique blend of global insight, data-driven strategies, and a passion for sports products. He has many years of experience working with some of the world’s most renowned brands, such as Nike, Adidas, and Perry Ellis. Chen has proven himself an influential figure in the sports merchandising industry.
A Passion for Sports Driven by Data
Having earned a Master of Science in sports product management from the University of Oregon, Chen’s entry into the sports merchandising sector began with a passion for sports and product innovation.
“It’s about more than selling a product,” he explains. “It’s about understanding the consumer—their needs, preferences, and behaviors—and creating a product assortment that resonates with them, whether in Taiwan, North America, or Latin America.”
This approach is what sets Chen apart in this competitive industry. His work at Nike, particularly in the APLA (Asia Pacific, Latin America) and North America regions, demonstrates his ability to fuse global insights with local market trends.
Data Is King
As a Senior Merchant for Nike APLA Men’s Sports division, Chen is responsible for developing product assortments for some of Nike’s most high-profile categories, such as Men’s basketball, Kobe Footwear, and apparel. His data-based strategies focus on sell-through rates, margin management, and full-price realization.
“Data is the backbone of everything we do,” Chen says. “It helps us stay ahead of the curve, adapt to market shifts, and make sure we’re delivering the right products at the right time.”
Chen’s work at Nike has had a measurable impact. One of the standout contributions was developing a framework to analyze consumer behavior patterns in the basketball category, which has since become a standard tool across the APLA merchandising team.
“Howard’s ability to synthesize complex data sets and consumer insights into actionable strategies has been an enormous boon,” a Nike supervisor shares.
A Collaborative Leader
Chen’s ability to collaborate across diverse teams and cultures is as important as his analytical prowess. At Nike, he has worked with teams in Beaverton, Oregon, regional stakeholders in APLA, and local market teams.
“I thrive on collaboration,” Chen adds. “Whether I’m working with the product creation team or discussing strategy with senior leadership, my role is to connect the dots and ensure everyone is on the same page.”
This cross-functional approach enables him to align products with market demands and company goals.
Another Notable Career Achievement
Chen has also handled projects ranging from managing Adidas’ seasonal assortments in Taiwan to overseeing the launch of new stores. One of his proudest accomplishments was leading the launch of six new Adidas stores in Taiwan and achieving a remarkable 20% month-over-month sales growth.
Key Insights Into Industry Trends
Chen is excited about the potential for new insights and tools in sports product merchandising.
“The market is evolving faster than ever,” he concludes. “Technology and social media are changing consumer behavior in real-time. As a result, we must be agile—constantly analyzing trends, understanding the shifts in consumer preferences, and adapting our strategies accordingly.”
Yu-Heng Chen’s understanding of complex global markets, analytical skills, and passion for sports product innovation has made him a formidable figure in the sports merchandising industry.
