
Water damage gets more expensive when wet materials stay wet. In the first hours after a leak, flood, backup, or burst pipe, water is still moving through the structure.
Drywall, insulation, framing, subflooring, cabinets, and carpet padding can absorb moisture even when the surface looks manageable.

Hour 6: The Wet Zone Has Usually Spread

Surface drying can be misleading. A floor can feel dry on top while the subfloor is still wet. A ceiling spot may show only where water finally appeared, not where it traveled. A wall can look normal while the insulation behind it is holding moisture.

That does not mean every water loss has visible mold at exactly 24 hours. It means the clock is real. Mold spores are already present indoors and outdoors. When they land on wet materials, moisture gives them the conditions they need to grow.
Once mold is suspected or confirmed, the work may require containment, removal of contaminated materials, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatment when appropriate, and documentation beyond ordinary drying.
Hour 48: More Materials May Need Removal
After 48 hours, materials that might have been dried may no longer be salvageable. Drywall, insulation, carpet padding, wood components, and porous finishes can hold moisture long enough for the job to expand.
The water category can also change depending on the source, time, temperature, and contamination. Clean water from a supply line is not handled the same way as gray water from a sump pump failure or black water from a sewer backup. The longer water sits, the more carefully the structure has to be evaluated.
Under the IICRC S500 standard, these are classified as Category 1 (clean), Category 2 (gray), and Category 3 (black) water, with the category determining extraction protocol and material removal scope.
This is where waiting often turns a drying job into demolition, sanitation, drying, mold remediation, and reconstruction.
Week 1 and Beyond: Hidden Water Becomes a Larger Restoration Job
If water has been sitting for days, especially in a vacation home, behind a wall, under flooring, or in a basement, the visible damage is rarely the full picture. Materials may need to be removed to reach wet cavities. Mold may be present in hidden areas. Odor may persist until the moisture source and affected materials are addressed.
At that point, the final cost depends on the source, square footage, affected materials, contamination level, and how long the structure stayed wet.
The practical issue is not one national average. It is the type of work required: drying drywall is a different job from removing drywall, insulation, trim, flooring, and cabinets, and then rebuilding the space.
A minor loss caught early typically dries within three to five days. A moderate loss with 24 to 72 hours of standing water can take one to two weeks to dry. A severe or whole-property loss can take several weeks to months from extraction through reconstruction.
