Luis Coll, a seasoned civil engineer and the founder of Coastec Built, is taking a new look at the construction industry in Florida by using the latest sustainable building practices.
With a Master’s degree in Business Administration and extensive experience in engineering and project management, Coll has led Costec Built through the most environmentally conscious and affordable housing projects throughout the Sunshine State.
Embracing Green Building Techniques
Coll’s focus on sustainability is evident in Coastec Built’s construction style. The company prioritizes using eco-friendly, non-toxic materials such as low-VOC paints and non-microparticle flooring options, protecting both the planet and the home’s future residents. Focusing on energy efficiency, Coastec Built’s homes feature advanced insulation techniques and are wired to support energy-efficient appliances, reducing the overall carbon footprint of each property.
“We want to provide both affordable housing solutions and a greener option in the market. While Coastec Built was founded to help middle and low-income families, there isn’t much point in the Earth being uninhabitable,” Coll reasons.
Harnessing Renewable Energy
One of the most important factors for sustainable building practices is the use of renewable energy sources. Coastec Built occasionally integrates solar panels into its designs, allowing homeowners to generate their own clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. In the United States, solar energy capacity has grown exponentially, with installed photovoltaic capacity increasing from 0.34 GW in 2008 to an estimated 97.2 GW by the end of 2023.
Coll himself supports the use of renewable energy, stating, “Solar tech is one of the easiest ways you can help reduce carbon footprint. The problem is that many older building designs don’t support this, making it a non-option. Upon request, our projects can be customized to use this technology.“
Efficient Water Management
Water conservation is also a major part of sustainable building practices, along with renewable energy usage. Coastec Built’s designs focus on efficient water management systems, such as low-flow plumbing fixtures and smart irrigation controllers, to minimize water waste. The company also advises clients on exploring other solutions, like rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, which can reduce a household’s water consumption by up to 50%.
“Water is a precious resource, and it is our responsibility to use it wisely,” Coll emphasizes. “You don’t need to rely entirely on the grid’s water supply. With the right home design and a few modern systems, you can cut waste and save on your water bill.“
Sustainable Materials and Construction Methods
Above all other eco-friendly initiatives, Coastec Built prioritizes using sustainable materials throughout its construction process. The company opts for recycled and locally sourced materials whenever possible, reducing the environmental impact of transportation and supporting the local economy. Coastec Built also employs advanced construction techniques, such as prefabrication and modular construction, which minimize waste and improve efficiency on the job site.
Coastec Built’s work has impacted the lives of thousands of families, both financially and through environmentally friendly construction initiatives. With a current pipeline set to deliver 100 homes annually for the next five years, the company is projected to aid thousands more—all without the environmental damage characteristic of other companies in its sector.
“We’ve come a long way, but there’s still so much work to be done,” Luis Coll says with a smile. “I’m excited to see what the future holds for Coastec Built and the families we serve. Together, we’re building a brighter, greener future.“
