Most parents would go through the roof at finding out that their child left a steady gig in healthcare in pursuit of online fame. Skylar Mae’s parents are an exception. The OnlyFans star had a job as a college dental nurse and left to start creating content online. Her parents didn’t just support her decision—they funded her early in her career and have remained her biggest cheerleaders.

Skylar Mae was a college student and a dental nurse when she was scouted by an OnlyFans creator. She joined a content house early on in her content creation career and decided to be upfront with her mother about it. She let her know where she was going and why, and her mom gave her full support. Skylar’s been clear from the start about her career goals and says that she’s comfortable being upfront about those goals with her family.

When Skylar Mae told her parents what she intended to do, they didn’t just give her the go-ahead—they invested in her career. They purchased lingerie for her so she could get started. Apparently, even her grandma pitched in with her wardrobe! Skylar’s family was proud of their girl and also wanted to make sure that she was safe. Says Skylar: “They are extremely supportive. I would go meet up with people to collab, my parents would drive me, and they would always text me to check in and tell me to send a thumbs up to know I’m okay. If I went and checked into a hotel to make content, ‘hey, message me when you’re there.’ Honestly it really built my confidence in the industry.”

Making the move to join OnlyFans was the right call for Skylar Mae. Within six months of starting out as a new creator, she was earning six figures monthly on the adults-only platform. At the time, her parents were facing some serious medical hurdles. “My mom had cancer, and my parents had a super successful business, but then my dad’s health just got so bad that he had to let it go. They were living paycheck to paycheck so I told them I’m gonna make some money.” Skylar was not only able to help—because of OnlyFans, she was able to fully cover their medical expenses. Now, she returns on her parents’ early investments with interest. She pays her parents a monthly stipend of $10,000–$20,000 and has recently renovated their bathroom. Skylar Mae not only pays for the family vacations with the money she earns on OnlyFans—she’s been able to retire her parents, both of whom needed to stop working due to ongoing health issues.

To say that Skylar Mae’s parents are proud is an understatement. Her father is so proud of her success on OnlyFans that he had his daughter’s stage name tattooed on his arm for the world to see. Skylar and her parents regularly talk about her content work like it’s any other job. Skylar says that they understand industry language and are genuinely happy for her. They were proactive about raising her in a sex-positive household, and she credits that with making such openness possible now that she creates adult content for a living. “My family has always been very open about sex,” says Skylar. “I knew what sex was when I was really young, because my dad worked out of out of state, so me and my sister and mom would travel to see my dad, and we’d obviously share a hotel room, and they’d be like, Okay, you guys need to be like, be outside of the room because we’re having sex. I was the kid in school telling everyone what sex was.”

While she’s open with her parents about what she does, she still has to maintain some very strong boundaries with how she discusses her work. Skylar Mae says that there are some days where she explains her work in more detail, but that other days she shuts down any work talk. Says Skylar: “There’s definitely a line I have when it comes to how much I want to share. They want to ask about the craziness, but I’m just like, stop, it’s too much—it depends on my mood. Sometimes I’ll go in depth with them, and there’s times when I say just stop, please. I guess maybe I’m a little bit more reserved than them.”

Skylar Mae’s story isn’t just about creating adult content. It’s about a young woman taking control of her financial options and having the kind of parental support that allows her to be fully transparent about how she’s raking in six figures every month. In the adult entertainment industry, creators having parents that are openly supportive of their careers is a rare thing. “When I tell other creators how supportive my parents are they can be super jealous, and some tell me their parents don’t speak to them at all,” says Skylar. Skylar Mae didn’t just pursue her own success—she brought her family along with her, and they just keep cheering her on.
