Save Ferris Feel Special: Monique Powell of ska-punk band Save Ferris told us of her joy witnessing the Specials reunite with Terry Hall in Hollywood, 2010.

Monique Powell: It had been over 30 years. The last time The Specials had played with Terry Hall as their assisting front man to the also consummate Neville Staple was when I was five years old. I grew up, watching Dance Craze and listening to The Specials on KROQ radio as a child, spinning my sister’s Specials 45s and dreaming of this day. Now, a grown woman, I stood with my now ex-husband and my best friend by my side. We all watched The Specials hit the stage and literally grabbed each other with tears in our eyes. There he was; Terry Hall in all of his brooding, snarky sexiness, right in front of us and in the flesh. In that moment they started to play “Do the Dog“, the entire club erupted into a communal bounce. The joy didn’t stop for the entire set. There were hugs on stage, the joy was infectious: Terry, Neville, Lynval, Roddy, Horace and John were together again, and not one person in attendance would ever be the same. They closed out the hour and a half set with “Enjoy Yourself” in the encore we were overcome to sing at the top of our lungs:

“Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think, Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink, The years go by, as quickly as you wink, Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think “

I will never forget this show, and now that Terry and John are gone, I am forever grateful I was able to experience this moment of musical magic. I cannot imagine there was one person there that night that does not echo my sentiment. I get misty as I write this and recall my experience at this live show; one reminder of the importance of live music and it’s ability to move the masses in a way no other element can. May live music never die. Bless the venues and the musicians that make it all possible. Amen.

“The years go by, as quickly as you wink. Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think“  ~The Specials
