The flickering neon sign of a Chicago body shop casts an eerie glow onto the rain-slicked street. Inside, the air hangs thick with the scent of grease and something metallic. This scene, both unsettling and strangely compelling, is the opening of Alexey Kotolevskiy’s award-winning short film, “One Night in Body Shop”. It is where horror blends with something else entirely. It is a world that pulls you in, a hallmark of Kotolevskiy’s career, which fuses diverse skill sets to create unique art.

From Moscow to Manhattan: A Transcontinental Journey

Kotolevskiy’s story begins in Moscow. He graduated with a Specialist degree in Graphic Design from the National Institute of Design. He honed his skills. He would later pursue further studies in Digital Media Design at Western Technical College in Wisconsin.

This transcontinental journey exposed Kotolevskiy to diverse artistic influences and perspectives. His early career involved creating promotional materials and event branding. He began to explore video editing and animation.

He mentioned that drawing, “I started by creating images. Once I learned how to draw them, I realized I wanted to know their stories, so I began writing scripts. But even that wasn’t enough. I started animating my drawings. That’s when I understood: I need to create stories from scratch and bring them to life—and that means I want to make films.”

The KGB Espionage Museum: A Turning Point

A turning point in Kotolevskiy’s career came when he was invited to serve as Art Director at the KGB Espionage Museum in New York. This museum sought to create an experience to immerse visitors. Kotolevskiy was tasked with transforming the space. He wanted to create compelling storytelling that drew visitors into the Cold War.

During the Cold War, countries around the world spent 1 to 2 percent of their GDP on intelligence, or about $50 billion to $100 billion per year. The KGB Espionage Museum’s collection of artifacts is part of that story.

Kotolevskiy’s approach involved creating visual displays. He wanted them to capture the imagination. He selected images and videos that would help transport visitors back in time.

His efforts were successful. The KGB Espionage Museum became one of New York’s top tourist destinations.

Kotolevskiy emphasizes that he was the originator of the concept behind the museum’s current form. He said, “I was the one who proposed the museum’s final design. I was invited to work there with a clear mission: to make the museum a must-visit destination for any tourist. Not long after, the KGB Espionage Museum began appearing in the top 10 lists and guides of museums and attractions in New York. I believe I accomplished that goal.”

Bridging Design and Film

While his work at the KGB Espionage Museum showcased his talents as a designer, Kotolevskiy harbored aspirations of becoming a filmmaker. He explains that he wanted to “do something revolutionary and unusual.”

Recent years have seen the rise of multimedia artists. More and more artists can weave together art forms into their pieces.
