Taylor Swift

Red (Big Machine)

Maisy Kay is Feeling Red: Pop singer and songwriter Maisy Kay told us about her love for a Taylor Swift classic.

Maisy Kay: Taylor Swift’s Red album is a masterpiece that has left a mark on so, so many fans worldwide, myself included. Through its touching melodies and heartfelt lyrics, it has served as a companion during some of my life’s most significant moments. One standout track, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” is absolutely captivating with its raw emotion and vivid storytelling. Lines like “you kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath” (INSANE!) showcase Taylor’s prowess as a lyricist and storyteller. As a songwriter myself who obsesses over lyrics, she has provided me with boundless inspiration. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, transcending time and speaking to the complexities of relationships in such a deeply personal way.

“The Last Time” is, in my opinion, a criminally underrated track and another absolute gem on the album, which offered me solace during times of teenage heartache. Its haunting melody and evocative lyrics served as a comforting soundtrack to more than one crying session as I traversed the emotional waters of young love. On the other hand, “Treacherous” captures the exhilarating rush of a newfound love, fully immersed in the moment of blossoming romance. The song’s infectious energy, particularly in the bridge, evokes that wind-in-your-hair feeling of driving with the windows down.

These tracks – alongside “Begin Again,” “I Almost Do,” “Starlight,” and “Holy Ground” – are a testament to Taylor’s ability to communicate the highs and lows of love, making Red not just an album, but a journey through all the twists and turns of the heart. Red is a timeless classic in her vast, and still growing, discography. It sometimes feels as if this album alone navigated me through the most poignant moments of my adolescence. It’s my hope that as a singer-songwriter, I am able to let down my own walls and share the freedom of that vulnerability with my fans to make their own connection with.
